چکیده
This paper argues that many visual scenes are based on a ”Manhattan” three-dimensional grid which imposes regularities on the image statistics. We construct a Bayesian model which implements this assumption and estimates the viewer orientation relative to the Manhattan grid. For many images, these estimates are good approximations to the viewer orientation (as estimated manually by the authors). These estimates also make it easy to detect outlier structures which are unaligned to the grid. To determine the applicability of the Manhattan world model we implement a null hypothesis model which assumes that the image statistics are independent of any three dimensional scene structure. We then use the log-likelihood ratio test to determine whether an image satisfies the Manhattan world assumption. Our results show that if an image is estimated to be Manhattan then the Bayesian model’s estimates of viewer direction are almost always accurate (according to our manual estimates), and vice versa.

متن کاملPlanar Structures from Line Correspondences in a Manhattan World
Traditional structure from motion is hard in indoor environments with only a few detectable point features. These environments, however, have other useful characteristics: they often contain severable visible lines, and their layout typically conforms to a Manhattan world geometry. We introduce a new algorithm to cluster visible lines in a Manhattan world, seen from two different viewpoints, in...
متن کاملThe Manhattan Frame Model - Manhattan World Inference in the Space of Surface Normals
Objects and structures within man-made environments typically exhibit a high degree of organization in the form of orthogonal and parallel planes. Traditional approaches utilize these regularities via the restrictive, and rather local, Manhattan World (MW) assumption which posits that every plane is perpendicular to one of the axes of a single coordinate system. The aforementioned regularities ...
متن کاملAn approach to rank efficient DMUs in DEA based on combining Manhattan and infinity norms
In many applications, discrimination among decision making units (DMUs) is a problematic technical task procedure to decision makers in data envelopment analysis (DEA). The DEA models unable to discriminate between extremely efficient DMUs. Hence, there is a growing interest in improving discrimination power in DEA yet. The aim of this paper is ranking extreme efficient DMUs in DEA based on exp...
متن کاملInfant mortality and income in 4 world cities: New York, London, Paris, and Tokyo.
OBJECTIVES We investigated the association between average income or deprivation and infant mortality rate across neighborhoods of 4 world cities. METHODS Using a maximum likelihood negative binomial regression model that controls for births, we analyzed data for 1988-1992 and 1993-1997. RESULTS In Manhattan, for both periods, we found an association (.05% significance level) between income...
